Literature Text

Father always insisted that golf came from “Gentlemen only, ladies forbidden”. Of course, everyone knew that was only to keep Mother, my sisters, and I from going with him.

He wasn’t a good father, in the sense of wanting to support his children doing whatever they wanted. There were rules, and we followed the rules if we knew what was good for us. The rules were supposedly meant to protect us, but everyone knew it was really to protect his interests in the community. After all, when his younger brother had run away and did what he really wanted to in life, it had almost destroyed all our respectability.

So Father gave us the rules on what was women’s business and what was men’s business  and we followed them for years.

Chief among the rules were that we were supposed to only have certain hobbies, that we would get jobs suitable for the family honor, and  that women were supposed to be the mourners, expressing their sorrow at relatives’ deaths through crying.

Father died when I was just out of high school.

I didn’t cry at his funeral.
