She took a breath of fresh air and looked up at the sky. The stars were faint, but she could just make out the pitcher and water flowing from it. Next to it was the ever loving horse rising out of the water.

It was nothing more than a dream. Young, foolish, idealistic, what hadn’t they called her? Wrapping herself in clothes of the scholar, trying to prove the points that needed to be proved, while still trying to be friendly, it had all been a perfect attempt doomed to failure.

Perfect had died, but not the goals she had set for herself earlier. The knowledge she had taught would remain, even if she was one of the most eccentric ones there, according to most of the students.

The ivory halls of academia were fulfilling. Dreams as a child of changing the world had floated away, instead becoming those of studying in depth the way things were. It was comforting to not have to focus on what could be in a concrete sense, but instead only in the abstract.

People were capable of being nothing more than disappointments, except for the select few that proved themselves able to think.

Donatio mortis causa.

It was time to return to the others and give them their gifts.

She looked at the river one last time. The banks were already over flowing, ready to overtake the town and soak it as well as the Nile had soaked Egypt in those long ago days of the Pharaohs. It would make an interesting study of human behavior.

She could leave money to one of the universities in order to fund it. That would be a worthwhile use of what she had, and perhaps she would be able to linger a little longer to oversee it.

Except there was no mystical horse to rise out of these waters and carry her away into the sunset, disappearing in a blaze of glory.

Donatio mortis causa refers to gifts made in contemplation of death.

My zodiac sign is, of course, Aquarius. Confession time! I really love astrology. Yeah, I know.

Anyways, common characteristics of Aquarius is that while people under it as idealistic, intellectual, etc, they have the flip side of aloofness, misanthropy, etc, when their beliefs and hopes aren't met. So, hopefully the main character embodies both. I tried to keep both the disappointment with people and the hints of the young idealist progressive romantic balanced.

Very obvious references to water, of course, but also air, since it is an air sign. Oh! And the Nile reference because in ancient Egypt, the constellation was associated with the coming flood of the banks (which was a good thing).

Pegasus constellation is right next to the Aquarius one, and they're both in the water section (as I so affectionately call it).

I find it to be very personal. Did you mean it to be so?
